Learning Oasis is a student-centered learning tool that provides learners with differentiated reading, writing, and vocabulary activities. Built on the principles of deliberate practice, Learning Oasis leverages the power of the Lexile Frameworks for Reading and Writing to provide each individual student with appropriately challenging activities. Student progress is monitored in real-time, ensuring that students are always working at their individual level.
The release of the Common Core State Standards has refocused educators on the importance of ensuring students are ready to meet the literacy demands of college and career. The psychometric scales underlying Learning Oasis allow students and educators to monitor growth in reading and writing against a college and career-ready standard.
Research from a variety of disciplines suggests that students develop expertise in a domain through the process of deliberate practice. Deliberate practice includes the following components: (1) targeted practice, (2) real-time corrective feedback, (3) intensive practice, (4) distributed practice, (5) self-directed practice, and (6) progress measured on a developmental scale. Oasis is designed to facilitate the development of expertise in literacy by providing students with opportunities to engage in deliberate practice. To learn more about these components, click here.
Learning Oasis is under constant development, and we are always looking to expand into more classrooms and homes. If you are interested in taking part in the ongoing Learning Oasis research, please contact Sean Hanlon (shanlon@lexile.com) or Carl Swartz (cswartz@lexile.com) for more information.
